Founded in 1960 as the Higher Medical Institute (HMI), Medical University - Varna holds the distinction of being the first higher medical school in North-Eastern Bulgaria.

The official birthdate of HMI-Varna is celebrated as October 1, 1961, marking the inaugural day of its first academic year. This institution was established to meet the urgent societal demand for highly qualified medical professionals and advanced healthcare services in the region.
